Pavers vs Concrete: What's Best for Your Driveway in Los Angeles?

I get this question on almost every driveway consultation: "Should I go with pavers or concrete?" There is no single right answer, but after installing driveways across Los Angeles for years, I can tell you what actually matters when you are making this decision.
Pavers: Why I Recommend Them for Most LA Driveways
Paver driveways give you design options that concrete simply cannot match. You pick the color, the shape, the pattern, and the border. When I install a paver driveway, each unit locks into the next one, so if the ground shifts slightly from tree roots or soil movement, the surface flexes instead of cracking. That flexibility is a big deal in LA where clay soils expand and contract with the seasons.
Expect to pay $12 to $30 per square foot installed. A well-built paver driveway lasts 30 to 50 years, and if one paver cracks, you pop it out and replace it. Try doing that with a concrete slab.
Concrete: When It Makes Sense
Poured concrete is a solid choice if budget is the main driver and you prefer a clean, minimal look. Standard concrete runs $6 to $15 per square foot and installs faster. You can stamp it or stain it for some visual interest. The trade-off is that it cracks more easily, especially over the clay soils we deal with around the Valley. Repairs always leave a visible patch.
My Honest Take for LA Homeowners
For curb appeal and long-term durability, pavers win for most driveways in our area. If you are on a tighter budget and just need a clean functional surface, concrete works fine. Either way, the base preparation underneath is what determines whether your driveway lasts 5 years or 50. That is where cutting corners will cost you. I wrote more about why base work matters in our drainage guide if you want the details.
