Choosing Materials: Paver Color, Patterns, Borders That Age Well

Choosing Materials: Paver Color, Patterns, Borders That Age Well

With hundreds of paver options available, choosing colors and patterns can feel overwhelming. After installing driveways and patios across LA, I have learned what looks great on day one and still holds up 15 to 20 years later. Here is what I guide clients toward.

Colors That Last

Earthy neutral tones like sandstone, charcoal, tan, and slate gray age the most gracefully. They blend with most home exteriors, hide minor staining, and do not show fading as obviously as brighter options. If you want visual interest, use two complementary neutral tones rather than one bold color. On our Sherman Oaks driveway, we used a sandstone field with charcoal borders and it looks sharp without being trendy.

Through-body colored pavers where the color goes all the way through, not just on the surface, hold their appearance far longer. They cost a bit more but the longevity justifies it.

Pattern Selection

Herringbone is the most popular for driveways and patios for good reason. It interlocks well, looks sophisticated, and creates visual movement. Running bond works well for walkways. Basketweave adds a traditional touch. For large areas, combining a field pattern with a contrasting border creates definition and makes the space feel intentional.

Border Design

A contrasting border frames your hardscape and gives it a finished look. Dark charcoal around a lighter field is a classic combination that never goes out of style. Soldier course borders where pavers are set on edge create a strong linear definition. I almost always recommend a border because the difference in appearance is significant for a small cost increase.

Material Types

Concrete pavers offer the widest selection and best value. Natural stone like travertine or flagstone looks premium but costs two to three times more and needs more maintenance. Porcelain pavers resist staining and fading extremely well, sitting between concrete and natural stone in price.

See Before You Commit

Always request physical samples and view them at your home in natural light. Colors look completely different under showroom lighting versus sunlight. Lay out several square feet next to your home's exterior to see how they interact. This five-minute step prevents expensive regrets. If you are also thinking about drainage and base prep, that is a conversation we should have before selecting materials.
