The Story
I get a lot of bathroom calls, but this one was special. The homeowner had a large primary bathroom that was stuck in the early 90s with pink tile, a garden tub nobody used, and a tiny shower stall. She told me she wanted it to feel like a spa. Not the word spa people throw around loosely. She actually brought in photos from a hotel in Scottsdale and said, "I want this feeling." So that is what we built toward.
Ryan, GLME Construction
Project Scope
Primary bathroom gut renovation with custom tile work, frameless glass shower, and heated floors.
The Challenge
Removing the garden tub and expanding the shower required moving the drain line and adding a linear drain. The existing subfloor had moisture damage from years of a slow leak under the tub that nobody knew about. We also had to bring the ventilation up to current code with a properly sized exhaust fan ducted to the exterior.
Our Solution
We tore out everything down to the studs. I had the subfloor replaced where the rot was, then we installed Schluter waterproofing membrane across the entire wet area. The new walk-in shower is 5 by 4 feet with a frameless glass enclosure, a rain showerhead, a handheld wand, and a built-in niche with accent tile. We ran heated floor mats under large-format porcelain tile throughout. The vanity is a 60-inch double with soft-close drawers and quartz tops. Lighting is all LED with a backlit mirror.
Materials Used
- Large-format porcelain tile
- Schluter waterproofing system
- Frameless glass shower enclosure
- Heated floor system
- 60-inch double vanity with quartz top
- Backlit LED mirror
My bathroom is my favorite room in the house now. Ryan understood exactly what I was going for and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The heated floors in the morning are the best decision I have ever made.
