Artificial Turf Maintenance: Keeping Your Lawn Cool, Clean, and Pet-Friendly

Artificial turf eliminates mowing, watering, and fertilizing, but it still needs some care to look its best and last its full 15 to 20 year lifespan. I have installed turf in yards across the Valley with multiple dogs, small children, and families who entertain every weekend. Here is what I tell every client after the install.

Weekly Basics

Pick up leaves, debris, and pet waste regularly. A leaf blower works great for dry stuff. For small areas, a stiff-bristle broom or plastic rake keeps the fibers standing upright and looking natural. Brush against the grain of the turf for the best result.

Monthly Deep Clean

Rinse the entire surface with a garden hose to clear dust and pollen. In pet areas, spray with an enzyme-based turf cleaner or a mix of water and white vinegar. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals. They damage fibers and break down infill over time.

Managing Heat in SoCal Summers

Turf gets hot in direct sun. On peak summer days it can hit 150 degrees on the surface. A quick spray with the hose drops the temperature fast and it is comfortable again within minutes. When I spec turf for clients, I always recommend lighter colored products or those with cooling technology. On our Woodland Hills project, the homeowner has three dogs and two kids and the turf still looks great over a year later.

Pet-Friendly Tips

Pick up solids daily. Rinse urine spots a few times per week. Use an enzyme cleaner monthly for odor control. Quality turf with proper drainage and antimicrobial infill handles pet use well. If you have multiple dogs, I recommend a dedicated pet area with extra drainage capacity built in from the start.

When to Call a Professional

If seams start separating, infill has washed out, or you notice drainage issues, it is time for professional service. Annual professional grooming and infill top-ups extend the life and appearance of your turf. If you are considering adding a patio cover over part of your turf area, that also helps with heat management and UV exposure.
