Kitchen Remodel Timeline: From Consultation to Final Walkthrough

Kitchen remodels are one of the most impactful upgrades you can make, but I find that most homeowners underestimate how long the process takes. I have managed many kitchen remodels at GLME and here is what a typical project looks like from start to finish in the LA area.
Phase 1: Consultation and Design (1 to 3 Weeks)
Everything starts with an in-home consultation where I measure the space and we talk about what you actually want. Layout changes, cabinetry style, countertops, appliances, flooring, fixtures. I usually bring a tablet with photos from past projects like our Calabasas kitchen remodel so you can see finishes in person. By the end of this phase, you have a detailed scope of work with transparent pricing.
Phase 2: Permitting (2 to 4 Weeks)
Most kitchen remodels in LA County require permits if you are moving plumbing, electrical, or gas lines. I handle the permit application and plan review. Timelines vary by city but generally take two to four weeks. Calabasas and some west Valley cities tend to be on the longer side.
Phase 3: Demolition and Rough Work (1 to 2 Weeks)
Once permits are approved, we tear out the old cabinets, countertops, flooring, and fixtures. Then the rough plumbing, electrical, and any structural work gets completed and inspected. If you want to understand more about what permits and inspections involve, I covered that in our permits guide.
Phase 4: Installation (3 to 5 Weeks)
This is where the transformation happens. Drywall patching and paint, new cabinets, countertop templating and fabrication, plumbing and electrical fixtures, flooring, and backsplash. Each trade follows a specific sequence. Rushing one step to save a day can cost you a week later.
Phase 5: Final Details and Walkthrough (1 Week)
Hardware goes on, appliances get connected, final paint touch-ups, deep clean. I do a detailed walkthrough with you noting any punch list items. Final inspections close out the permits.
Total Timeline: 8 to 15 Weeks
A standard kitchen remodel takes 8 to 15 weeks from permit approval to completion. The key to staying on schedule is making material selections early. When homeowners wait until demolition to pick a countertop, that adds weeks of lead time right in the middle of the project.
